Yeşim Ayşem, eğitiminin bir kısmını Almanya’da sürdürürken, Türkiye’ye yaptığı seyahatlerinde Perihan Arel’in çalışmalarından etkilenerek resim çalışmalarına başlamaya karar verir. Bu amaçla yurt dışında, Maria Groditzki’den resim dersleri alır ve Almanya’da bazı karma sergilere katılır. 1986 Türkiye'ye dönüşüyle, Perihan Arel’in stüdyosunda fırça ile biraz daha pekişerek, yağlı boya çalışmalarını ilerletip resme karşı olan bu hayranlığını bir kat daha artırmıştır.
